Biotechnology

About

The Department of Biotechnology established in the year 1993. Since inception the Department has been creating manpower in diverse areas of biotechnology and is engaged in conducting research in frontier areas of the subject. The faculty members have been actively involved in teaching and research and have achieved accolades from various corners of scientific community. Many faculty members are also involved in the development of entrepreneurship in several potential areas of biotechnology in the North Eastern region. Over the last two decades, a number of research projects have been funded by DBT, DST, ICAR, MoEF, DRDO, UGC, ICMR, NMPB, SERB, GBPIHED, ASTEC and Govt. of Assam that have contributed to innovative research findings. Major funds for infrastructure development were received from DBT and DST (FIST Program) in the last five years.

The Department was established to develop highly trained professional in the field of Biotechnology and to create awareness among the society to harness the benefits of modern biotechnological innovation.

The objectives of the Department was to conduct academic programmes for Post Graduate courses (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in Biotechnology through upgraded curricula for developing trained manpower in the priority areas of Food Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Cancer and Biomedical Research, Natural Product Chemistry, Microalgae, Bioenergy and Bioprospecting, Miocropropagation Technology, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, Neutraceuticals and Functional foods.

We carry out need-based research in different areas of Biotechnology and providing more impetus to areas like Bio-prospecting and bioassay of medicinal plants, indigenous fermented foods of the eastern Himalayan region, development of Biopesticides and Biofertilizers, In-vitro multiplication and conservation of rare and endangered plants of the Northeastern region, Microalgal diversity, Bioenergy and Bioprospecting, Petroleum Biotechnology, Cancer chemoprevention, Yeast quorum sensing and microbial signalling, Nutritive values in cereals and vegetables of Northeastern region, Stress physiology in plants and Plant Genomics. In addition, a rationale to develop a regional database for medicinal plants and microbes of Northeastern India and Assam in particular is envisaged.
