The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1955 and ever since it has been imparting high quality education in Chemistry at the postgraduate (PG) level in the M.Sc. programme. The Department offers Research programmes leading to the Ph.D. degree in frontier areas of research. The Department also runs a 1-year PG Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (PGDAC). Further, the Department is also engaged in some outreach programmes with the active participation of the highly qualified faculty members. The Department also offers consultancy services. The excellent track record of the Department in the field of academics has enabled it to earn the reputation of being one of the leading Chemistry Departments not only of the North Eastern Region, but also of the whole country.

The high quality of research activities of the faculty members have enabled the Department to attract Research grants from several funding agencies and Government Departments such as UGC, DST, DAE, DBT, BRNS, CSIR etc. In addition, the Department received grants from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in which it has attained the DSA-II status. Currently the Department is also receiving infrastructural support under FIST Level II offered by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi. Furthermore, the Department has also been in receipt of grants from Zydus Cadila (Ahmedabad) and Oil India Limited (OIL) for renovation of laboratories and augmentation of Instrumental Facilities. Past students of the department are to be found working at most of the academic and research institutions of Northeast India. The alumni of the Department have been working as Faculty Members at IITs, various Universities, Colleges, CSIR-NEIST, etc. A good number of alumni also have been holding responsible administrative and research jobs at numerous governmental department and private organizations in India and abroad.
