Communication and Journalism

About

It was a rare foresight and ability to think ahead of the times that the Department of Communication & Journalism of Gauhati University was five decades back in 1967.

Being one of the first ten university departments of journalism studies in the country it was opened as a part of the Political Science Department under the able leadership of Professor K Venkatarao, who was instrumental in setting it up.The first teacher of the Dept was Prof A K Bannerjee.

For a long time, till 1983 the department was conducting part-time diploma courses in journalism still under the overall control of its parent department, i.e. Political Science. But in 1984 it was bifurcated to become a full-fledged department to offer postgraduate diploma course in Communication & Journalism.

The Department launched full-fledged two-year four-semester MA Mass Communication course from 2005 with the first batch of 20 students. The BCJ course is kept in abeyance for the time being.

Within the short span of time since the M.A. Mass Communication course was introduced, the students have been well-received by the industry. They have been getting absorbed in various private as well as government and semi-government concerns. Some of the organizations where the products of this department are absorbed are: Dibrugarh University, KKHSOU, IGNOU, OKDISCD, Cotton College, Diphu Govt. College, Bongaigaon College and other colleges of Assam in Mass Communication Department, SIRD, NRHM, SSA, CMS(Delhi), SACS, DO, AIR, Private Satellite Channels of Assam, FM channels of Assam, almost all print media houses of Assam, DIPR Assam etc. Besides, some of the students are working in other parts of the country in Audio Visual and print media. Our students are also working with various PR, Advt. and web content development organizations.

It is worth mentioning that several of our current students have been selected for casual/part-time jobs as programme anchors and announcers/programme producers, news readers etc. in the television and radio channels.

All students are associated with the Radio Luit 90.8 MHz, a community radio of Gauhati University since its inception in 2011.

The students of this Department are sent for internship and summer placements in reputed media and media-related organizations across the state as well as in other parts of the country.

Communika, a mega media festival of the North-Eastern Region is organized annually. Communika is a platform for developing the inner skills of communication and media students as well as the other students who are interested in different media related activities.

The students of the Department have been successfully organizing Communika since 2006. This is the first ever media festival among students of Mass Communication organized fully by themselves. The event exposed the students to the practical aspects of event management and organization, which has become an important constituent of communication studies. The students also publish a magazine 'Pratyasa' during Communika.
