Objectives & Missions

Academic Staff College were established by the UGC in pursuance of the recommendations made in the National Policy of Education, 1986. These institutions are hosted in various universities and have the responsibility of addressing the faculty development needs of teachers in Higher Education. ASCs organize, conduct, monitor and evaluate Orientation Programs, Refresher Courses and Workshops which are designed to cater to faculty at different levels in Higher Education institutions.

History

The UGC - Academic Staff College (UGC – ASC), Gauhati University, was one of the first such institutions to be set up in 1988. Today it is among the 51 UGC ASCs that are spread throughout the country. It is the only ASC in North - East India and its catchment area includes the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Teachers in colleges and universities from all these seven states, and also from states outside the region, participate in the courses conducted by this ASC.
