Vision:
The vision of the department is to contribute towards the enrichment of academic research, learning, and the overall development of Assamese language, literature, and culture.
Objectives:
The department has the following objectives:
To impart higher education in Assamese, language, literature, culture, and other relevant areas.
To conduct research programmes in the fields of Assamese language and linguistics and all disciplines related to literary and cultural studies with particular reference to Assamese.
To conduct research and extension projects and programmmes in relation to the aforecited disciplines and the languages of various ethnic groups in Assam and the North East.
Location:
The department started in 1948 in the Cotton College premises at Panbazar in Guwahati, as the newly born Gauhati University had yet to have its own campus. The University shifted to its present campus at Jalukbari in Guwahati in 1954. Consequently, the department was given a space in the first floor of the Arts Building of the University. It shifted to its present space in the ground floor of the New Academic Building in 2012.
Introduction:
Gauhati University was established in 1948 with a view to building up a home of its own in the field of higher education and research in Assam and also to create an atmosphere for the development of the language, literature, and culture of Assam through higher learning and academic research.
The Department of Assamese was among the first ones to be started with the establishment of the university in 1948. It needs no insisting that this department was conceived as a seminal institution of higher education and research in Assamese language, literature, and culture, as well as that of diverse ethnic groups inhabiting Assam. With this aim in view and all the resources at its command, this department has immediately contributed towards the enrichment of the literary and cultural horizons of Assam and thus done a commendable job for the last six decades. With its glorious history and the signal constitution of all the illustrious scholars associated with the department since its inception, it has been playing a leading role in the development of modern Assamese life and culture, thus paving the way for the establishment of an advanced institute of academic research and learning.
The Pioneers:
The pioneers of the department were Dr. Banikanta Kakati, Dr. Birinchi Kumar Barua, and Dr. Maheswar Neog, who were great scholars in the fields of language, literature, and the culture of Assam. Academicians and great authors like Dr. Satyendra Nath Sarma, Shri Rajanikanta Deva Sarma, Dr. Sukumar Biswas, Dr. Anima Dutta, Dr. Govinda Prasad Sarma, Dr. Umesh Deka, Dr. Dipankar Moral, Dr. Pradip Jyoti Mahanta, and many others contributed to the strengthening of the department. The heads of the department as of now are listed below. With their association with various national organizations like Sahitya Akademi, the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Asam Sahitya Sabha, the department has grown with great momentum.
Past Programmes:
The department started with the introduction of the two-year postgraduate course, and the first batch of students appeared in the MA final examination in 1950. The undergraduate course was also a component of the department, which was later left to be undertaken by the affiliated colleges, and the postgraduate studies got expanded with more teachers and included more course components. The postgraduate course of study includes two groups: Group A (literature) and Group B (language), with eight papers in each group. The course, in which cultural studies form an important component in each group, also offers several optional papers in both groups covering the entire range of literary and linguistic studies in Assam and India. The syllabus was revised from time to time in keeping with the changing trends in language and literature studies.
In 2001, the department introduced the semester system for the postgraduate course, consisting of different components in the course. There were twenty papers equally distributed for four semesters. The new components include Tibeto-Burman languages, dialectology, comparative literature, translation studies, a general outline of Indian literature, western influence on Assamese literature, etc.
The department went for the CBCS syllabus in 2016. There are now eighteen courses in four semesters. Each of the first and second semesters consists of five courses, one of which is a value-added course. The third semester consists of four courses, of which two are core and two are elective, while the fourth semester syllabus consists of four courses, of which two are core, one is elective, and one is elective open. The syllabus was revised in 2019. The MA CBCS programme in the department has an intake capacity of eighty-eight per year.
The department introduced the Ph.D. coursework programme and the M.Phil. coursework programme in 2010 as per new Ph.D. guidelines. The syllabus for the programmes was later amalgamated and revised in 2021. The MPhil programme was later discontinued in 2022 in response to the abolition of the programme in the National Education Policy 2020. The number of students admitted to the Ph.D. programme is based on the clearance of the GU-RET.
In 2023, the department started the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) in Assamese, with an intake capacity of twenty per year. This is a programme divided into eight semesters. However, lateral exit facilities after the completion of two, four, and six semesters are available in this programme.
The department takes pride in the fact that nearly ten thousand students have earned postgraduate degrees (MA) in Assamese, while more than three hundred scholars have attained Ph.D. degrees from this department.

A life-size bronze statue of Bezbaroa, sculpted by the renowned painter and sculptor Benu Mishra, was unveiled by Imran Shah, President of Asam Sahitya Sabha, in front of the New Academic Building that day.
Between April 30, 2023 and May 10–11, 2024, the department observed a year-long Platinum Jubilee celebration programme.

Library:
The department has a library of its own, which has been named after Dr. Banikanta Kakati, the first professor and head of the department and an eminent linguist, critic, anthropologist, and cultural historian. The library has 5,895 and journals, which have been digitally catalogued in recent years. The present librarian is Dr. Banani Chakravarty.
Archive:
The department has an archive, where there are nearly two hundred manuscripts of Assamese books from late medieval times, performance masks, a Guru Asana (religious altar), and a few other valuable items.
Centre for Sankaradeva Studies:
The Centre for Sankaradeva Studies is an annex of the Department of Assamese at Gauhati University. The first of its kind, the centre is envisaged as an institute of research and extension to facilitate comprehensive studies and explorations of the renaissance portals of the Sankardeva movement. The scope of these studies and explorations includes the life and works of the saint and his principal apostles, the abiding value of their multitudinous contributions, and their far-reaching impact and influence on the social, cultural, economic, and religious life and mindset of the people of Assam through the centuries. The centre would open up new possibilities for research on the huge corpus of literary production, including epic drama, theological treatises, translations of and transcreations of great scriptures, hagiographies, etc. It may be remembered that four manuscripts of this tradition preserved in the MS section of the Krishnakanta Handique library have been selected as works of heritage and were honored at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt. The centre would also open up new possibilities for research on the heritage of music, dance, and drama, the philosophy and theology of the religion, and the socio-cultural significance of the movement in the context of the multi-ethnic social matrix of Assam. Thus, the centre will be a major resource base in terms of information and knowledge relating to major areas of the cultural history of Assam, and thus a lighthouse in relation to knowledge and learning and also in the promotion of peace and harmony, unity, and togetherness among social groups of India in general and Assam in particular. The Centre brought out Descriptive Bibliography of Sankaradeva Studies (Ed. Prof. Bimal Mazumdar; GU Press) in 2014.
Presently, Prof. Kanak Chandra Saharia is the coordinator of the centre.
Language Laboratory:
The department consists of a language laboratory, which was established in 2007 by the late Prof. Dipankar Moral, a teacher of linguistics in the department until his demise in 2008. The laboratory was revamped in 2018, and Prof. Dipti Phukan Patgiri coordinated it for some time. Dr. Dipamani Haloi is the present coordinator, and Dr. Leena Dihingia is the present deputy coordinator of the laboratory.
The laboratory has a few computers with sound-analysis facilities. It is designed to teach the students and the researchers of the department linguistics in a better and more methodical way.
Alumni Association:
The Department of Assamese at Gauhati University has had an alumni association since December 24, 2022. Formed in the Department Advisory Committee meeting on that day, the association has been coordinated by Dr. Rekha Rani Devi, Associate Professor of the department.
