About

Gauhati University started the Department of Hindi on 31 October 1970 and thus became the first university in the North East Region to have such a Department. Dr. HiralalTiwari (HoD) and Dr.Krishna Narayan PrasadMagadh,the founder faculty members of the department contributed a lot for the department.

The Department is to popularize Hindi in the North Eastern Region through providing opportunities for higher studies. It seeks to develop human resources in the field of Hindi-oriented job opportunities and to strengthen national unity and integrity. The department gives importance to Hindi as a Link Language, Official language ,National Language as well as International language.

Placement Profile

Since 1970 till the present, good number of M.A. M.Phil.and Ph.D. degree holders of the Department have succeeded in getting placement in various educational institutions,Colleges,Universities government and semi–government offices.

 

Clubs and Societies

The Hindi Shifty Praishad is the literary forum of the Department which aims at developing the oratory and literary capabilities of the students. Popular lectures are also organised under its banner.

 

Student Activities

Hindi Department is very good one regarding student activities. Almost every year at least one post of PGSU (Post Graduate Student Union) is occupied by departmental student. The Best Actor award for Versity week and Youth Festival for the year 2011-12 was owned by a student of the department. That very was the Cultural Secretary for the year 2013. Under his leadership in National Youth Festival G.U. received 3rd prize in both Folk Dance and Folk Orchestra at KalyanUniversity,West Bengal. The Department has received seven Prizes in the U.B,2016. In both Arm wrestling and Relay Race Department got the 1st prize.

 

Student Fellowship

The Shreemanta Shankaedeva Fellowship for Comparative Studies of Literature (Assamese/Hindi) at Gauhati University is being sponsored by Oil India Limited since 2003.A handsome token money prize is awarded to the Best Post Graduate student of the Department, G.U. by the Bank of Boroda, Regional Office, Guwahati every year.
