About: The department of Philosophy established in the year 1948 is one of the oldest departments of the University. It has been ceaselessly working on emanating philosophical ideas, classical and contemporary, Indian as well as Western. The Department insists on developing analytical and critical approach to problems of philosophy. The department has shifted to semester system with effect from the academic session 2000-01.

Thrust Areas of Study: Indian Philosophy – both classical and contemporary, Analytic Philosophy, Continental philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Religion, Moral Philosophy, Applied Ethics, and Modern Logic.

History: The department has reached its present state with the invaluable academic contributions from eminent scholars like Dr. Rakesh Ranjan Sharma, Sri. Bhabananda Dutta, Smti. Nilima Dutta, Professor B. Pahi, Professor K. Saratchandran, Professor K. Bagchi, Dr. A. P. Rao, Dr. K. R. Patnaik, Professor G. C. Khan, Professor K.C. Das, Professor M. K. Kutty, Professor D. K. Chakravarty, Professor Nilima Sharma, Professor S. S. K. Singh, Professor Sibnath Sarma and Professor Girish Sharma.

Objectives: To educate students in the Indian as well as Western philosophies keeping in mind the contemporary global trend in development of Philosophical ideas. To create an environment for the flourishing of a philosophical spirit. To help develop a critical and analytical outlook among students. To provide education based on epistemic, aesthetic and spiritual values for the holistic growth of persona among students.

Research Activity: The Department publishes its own research journal Gauhati University Journal of Philosophy (GUJP) a peer reviewed journal recognized by UGC.

General Guidelines to Authors:

Original articles on any branch of philosophy, review of recently published philosophy books, short notes on any philosophical issue, comments and discussions on articles published in earlier issues of GUJP may be submitted (in two copies, one in MS Word and one in PDF) for publication by authors of all categories – teachers, researchers, students and professionals belonging to any discipline. The same is to be emailed to editorgujp@gmail.com.  There is no word-limit as such, but unnecessary/redundant elaborations and repetitions must be avoided.  

An Abstract of not more than two hundred words should be submitted along with articles. It also should include a few key words related to the paper.

The author shall take sufficient care to avoid spelling and grammatical errors.

The author has to attach a self-certification to the effect that the write-up has not been published /not sent for publication anywhere else.

Name, address, designation, institutional affiliation, phone no. and email id of the author must be provided.

Non-English terms are to be written using diacritical marks wherever applicable. The same are to be italicized.

Italics, not bold types, should be used to show emphasis.

Citations/references are to be given using MLA style (please see the style sheet). Authors shall take enough care to provide detail and exact information of source texts.

 Notes, if any, are to be given at the end of the paper using serial numbers (1,2,3…) for which  there should be corresponding super-scripted numbers in the appropriate place in the body of the text.

The articles will go through a double peer-review and a plagiarism check for selection.

The author would be informed about acceptance or otherwise of their paper in due course of time.
