A seminar on Non-Verbal Communication Skills was conducted at the Department of Business Administration, Gauhati University, on 11th September, 2024 by Life Coach, Image Consultant & Hypnosis Practitioner Ms. Seemana Mahanta from Doha, Qatar
The seminar kicked off by explaining the importance of non-verbal communication. She emphasized that a significant portion of human interaction is non-verbal, with cues often carrying more weight than spoken words. Whether it’s body language, facial expressions, or gestures, these signals are instrumental in conveying emotions, intentions, and attitudes. The speaker stressed that awareness and skill in interpreting these cues can lead to more effective communication in both personal and professional settings.
Participants were introduced to different non-verbal cues, such as body language, facial expressions, eye contact, personal space (proxemics), and paralanguage (tone, pitch, and pace of voice).
The seminar also addressed cultural differences in non-verbal communication, highlighting how non-verbal cues vary across cultures. What may be considered appropriate in one culture could be misunderstood in another.
One of the most practical aspects of the seminar was the focus on reading and responding to non-verbal signals. Participants learned how to accurately interpret non-verbal cues from others and adjust their responses accordingly.
To reinforce the theoretical knowledge, the seminar incorporated interactive sessions and workshops. These hands-on activities allowed participants to practice their non-verbal communication skills in real-life scenarios. Through role-playing and group exercises, attendees received feedback on their body language, eye contact, and overall communication style. These practical sessions were highly appreciated, as they helped participants directly apply what they had learned, making the lessons more tangible and actionable.
The seminar concluded with a lively Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to clarify doubts and engage with the speaker on specific topics of interest. Attendees left the seminar with a stronger grasp of non-verbal communication and practical strategies to improve their interactions.
