Activities Beyond the Classroom and Laboratory
Under the umbrella of Society for Chemical Education, Assam (SCEA) the Department organized various awareness and educational programmes at various schools and colleges of the state. The SCEA, headquartered in the department, organizes a State Chemistry Olympiad every year separately for students of classes IX, X, XI, XII. About 10,000 students appear in the Olympiad every year and the best performers are awarded cash prizes and mementos at a function organized in the GU campus. An eminent scientist is invited every year to deliver the Prof. P. K. Sarma Memorial Lecture for the benefit of the ~300 school students who participate in the prize distribution ceremony. This year's P. K. Sarma Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. V. Chandrasekhar, Centre Director, TIFR, Hyderabad on 5 May 2018. SCEA also publishes a bilingual magazine called Rasayan Siksha (Chemistry Education).

Prof. P. Phukan (2nd from right) of the Department had the distinction of serving as the mentor of the Indian students participating in the International Chemistry Olympiad held in Baku and also in Hanoi, Vietnam.
M. Sc. in Chemistry in 4 Semesters (2 Years)
Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (PGDAC) in 2 Semesters (1 Year)
Ph. D.
For details, please see below and click here for 2018-2019 admission.
All courses start in August every year.
Admission to the M.Sc. programme is based on a combination of marks secured in the qualifying examination and an Entrance Test. In the qualifying examination, B.Sc. (or an equivalent degree from a recognized university) the applicant should have passed with Honours/Major in Chemistry and Mathematics and Physics as the other subjects studied. The syllabus of the programme is based on CBCS and updated. Course Fee: as per university stipulation.
For admission into the PGDAC programme, the applicants should pass B.Sc. with Chemistry as a subject. Chemical engineering graduates are also eligible. Course Fee: Rs. 10,000 per semester.
Admission to the PhD programme is entirely based on the results of GU-RET (Research Entrance Test). However, CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellows are exempted from appearing in RET. The candidates selected to join the PhD programme need to go through PhD course work during the first (August-December) semester during which the PhD students are allotted to supervisors willing and eligible to accept students. After successful completion of the coursework, the PhD students write a proposal or synopsis for research which, when approved by his / her Research Advisory Committee (constituted of the Supervisor and two other faculty members who are reconized as PhD Guides by the University) becomes the topic of research for provisional registration. The award of the PhD degree usually takes about five years. Apart from the Junior and Senior Research Fellowships awarded by CSIR and UGC there are several fellowships / scholarships avalable to students who are admitted to the PhD programme of Gauhati University in Chemistry. These include the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship, the National Fellowships for SC, ST and OBC candidates etc. Faculty members also are sometimes able to provide funding to the PhD researchers.
