The Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, first established as an Environmental Research Unit in 1978, was later on raised to the status of an academic department in November 1980 for teaching and research in environmental meteorology, environmental geophysics and environmental pollution. This Department was the first department of higher learning in the North-Eastern Region where teaching and research in this multidisciplinary subject has been conducted since its inception. The Department has at the core of its mission an overriding concern to provide quality higher education in the area of Environmental Science catering to the need of the North Eastern Region in general and the state of Assam in particular. Towards realization of this dream, the Department has been striving for the last 35 years by engaging itself in teaching, research as well as extension activities to this multidisciplinary subject.
Besides meeting its academic objectives, the Department aims at providing leadership in the area of conservation of environment, rational utilization of natural resources and creation of public awareness in the region. Its unflinching concern for achieving academic excellence both in teaching and research is reflected in the creation of sophisticated technological and manpower base in frontier areas of science and technology such as image processing and GIS, satellite remote sensing, digital broadband monitoring of seismic events, flood analysis, pollution studies, environmental monitoring of air, water and soil quality, environmental impact analysis, occupational health survey etc.
The Department offers research facilities to scholars in the field of air, water and soil pollution, environmental meteorology, environmental hazards - earthquakes, floods and landslides, application of remote sensing and GIS in natural resource management and fluvial geomorphology, EIA, etc. The Department has conducted several research projects sponsored by DST (FIST), UGC, ISRO, MoES, Guwahati Refinery, Border Roads Organization, WWF etc.
The Department of Environmental Science has both teaching and research programmes in interdisciplinary fields. As of today the department is conducting M. Sc. Programme in Environmental Science with two specialization - (a) Environmental Pollution - Control and mitigation and (b) Natural Hazards in Northeast India. The broad areas covered in the PhD Programme are - Water, Air and Soil Pollution, Flood and Earthquake Hazards, Climate of Northeast India, Land use and Land cover study, Wetlands - status and management, Aerobiology, Environmental degradation due to Industrial and Mining activities, etc.
Being a multidisciplinary subject, students having postgraduate degree in other relevant subjects are also admitted in the Ph. D. programme of the Department through entrance test. In such cases, students are given the background/basic knowledge of the subject through Ph. D. Course work. The research scholars are given sufficient input to learn how to frame research questions on the topics related to environment, especially on the topics belonging to Northeast India. They are trained to develop their skill to perform multidisciplinary approaches for their respective research problem/topic.
