About Pre-Examination Training Centre (PETC)

The Pre-Examination Training Centre (PETC) at the Gauhati University was established in the Year 1985 with the aim of providing quality Coaching programmes to students of the University and the North Eastern Region, appearing for the Competitive Examinations of the State Civil Services and All India Civil Services. It is a Department located within the University Campus having an independent Building. Coaching classes for examinations of UPSC Civil Services, Bank PO & Clerical and also for various examinations under Staff Selection Commission are being regularly held. For the last several years, coaching programmes for students appearing in the NET (Arts) Examination have been organized for the Paper common to candidates of all subjects. In addition to the above, coaching for NET (Science) Examination of the CSIR-UGC for various subjects are also held from time to time. In the session 2018-19 the Pre-Examination Training Centre (PETC) will be relocated to the GU Arts Building from its present location in the GU Administrative Campus.

Courses & Programmes

The Pre-Examination Training Centre, Gauhati University has been very active regarding guidance of students for competitive examinations, such as IAS, ACS, Banking Services and also for UGC and CSIR NET examinations. Listed below are some of the coaching activities that have been organized since 2014-15.

 

1. Coaching for Competitive Examinations during 2017-18

At present a combined coaching programme for 2018 UPSC Civil services prelims and 2018 APSC Civil services prelims is being held under the aegis of, Pre-Examination Training Centre, GU (PETC). The programme has been outsourced to Guwahati based Renergy Solutions Private Limited. About 20 students have taken admission for the coaching programme. Also, there is a weekly coaching class for CSIR NET in Mathematics being conducted by the Department of Mathematics, GU.

 

Coaching for 2017 UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination: Coaching for 2017 Civil Services Preliminary Examinations, on an experimental basis, was outsourced to a Guwahati based institution named Renergy Solutions Private Ltd. Instead of free coaching, candidates were required to pay a very reasonable fee which was further subsidized by GU authorities for students currently enrolled in regular GU classes including Research Scholars. The coaching programme was for a total 150 contact hours spread between March to May 2017. From that batch of 17 students Ms Karishma Das cleared UPSC Prelims and Mains 2017.

 

Coaching for 2017 APSC Civil Services Mains Examination: Coaching for 2017 APSC Civil Services Mains Examinations was also outsourced to Renergy Solutions Private Ltd. There were 43 students in the batch. Results of the examinations are yet to be declared.

 

On 17 June India’s leading expert for IAS preparation, Mr. Jojo Mathews, delivered a seminar talk to GU students which was organized in collaboration with PETC, GU and ETEN IAS.

 

2. Coaching for Competitive Examinations during 2016-17 During the year 2016-17 the following coaching programmes were undertaken in the Pre-Examination Training Centre, Gauhati University:

Coaching for 2016 Civil Services Preliminary Examinations: Coaching programme for 2016 Civil Services Preliminary Examinations that had begun on 16 March 2016 continued till June 11. On this occasion books worth Rs. 15,000 related to this examination were procured for the PETC library. There was also an awareness programme followed by a mock-test in collaboration with the well-known ETEN-IAS coaching institute.

 

Coaching for June 2016 UGC National Eligibility Test: Coaching for NET examinations was held during 25 May to 24 June 2016. This was a one month course for the general objective type paper common to all UGC NET candidates.

 

Coaching for June 2016 CSIR National Eligibility Test: A two months programme was held in the subject “Mathematical Sciences” during April-June 2016. The venue for the programme was the Dept of Mathematics, GU.

 

Coaching for Banking Services Recruitment Test: A two-month (50 days) intensive coaching programme for banking services recruitment tests was held during 1 November to 31 December 2016. A total of 59 students availed of coaching in the programme.

 

Coaching for December 2016 CSIR National Eligibility Test: A two months programme was held in the subject “Mathematical Sciences” during October-December 2016. The venue for the programme was the Dept of Mathematics, GU.

 

Coaching for December 2016 UGC National Eligibility Test: The date of the examination was postponed to the second week of January 2017. Consequently, the dates of Coaching were rescheduled. The classes were held from 14 December 2016 to 13 January 2017. This was a one month course for the general objective type paper common to all UGC NET candidates.

 

 

3. Coaching for Competitive Examinations during the period 2015-16: Coaching was held for UPSC Civil Services Prelims, UGC NET Common Paper (both for June and December), CSIR NET for Mathematics and for Banking Services Recruitment Tests.

 

4. Coaching for Competitive Examinations during the period 2014-15: In addition to the usual coaching programmes for UPSC Civil Services Prelims, UGC NET Common Paper (both for June and December), CSIR NET for Mathematics and for Banking Services Recruitment Tests, a mega seminar for Civil Services examinations called “Art of Success” was conducted in collaboration with the leading IAS Coaching Institute Chanakya Academy. The highlight of that programme held on 16 October 2014 was the inspirational talk delivered by Mr. A K Mishra, Director of Chanakya Academy.

 

Remedial Classes

The UGC remedial classes are organised by the Pre-Examination Training Centre, Gauhati University, in various teaching departments of GU as part of the UGC Scheme of Coachings for SC, ST, OBC and Minorities under the five year plans. As per the UGC guidelines the coaching is offered free to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) & Minority Students. Under under the XII plan, these classes were conducted from 2014 to 2016 in several PG Departments of GU. In 2014, a total of 454 students availed of this coaching facility in 16 PG Departments of GU of whom 96 were from SC, 55 from ST, 106 from OBC and 197 from minority communities. In 2015 total number of beneficiaries were 261 from 10 Departments of whom there were 47 from SC, 32 from ST, 48 from OBC and 134 from minority communities. In 2016 only 6 Departments conducted the Remedial Classes where a total of 116 students were beneficiaries. There were 18 SC, 18 ST, 37 OBC and 43 Minority community students.
