Computer Science

The department of Computer Science, Gauhati University was established in the year 1985 with an objective to produce Computer Science and IT professionals for software industries, research & educational institutions and other organizations in India and abroad, so as to enhance employment and association of the new generation in these fields and related areas.

The department started with Prof Malay AnandaDutta who is the founder teacher of the department. The department started a one-year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Computer Science and Applications with thirty seats in 1986 at time in which there were only a few institutions in the entire country offering post graduate courses in Computer Science. The objectives of the course were to produce Computer Programmers, Research Scholars, Teachers, Instructors, Computer Professionals. The course continued till 2000.

In January 2001 the department has started a two-year MSc course in Computer Science, replacing the PGDCSA course, with a student intake 15 per batch.

In 2005 the Department started another course - MSc in Information Technology together with the existing MSc programme in Computer Science.

Computing Laboratories

The department maintains its own Intranet Web Server and Mail Servers. All PCs in both the laboratories are connected with LAN/Wifi and high speed Leased Line Internet connections.

The department maintains two full fledged computer laboratories which are Well equipped with the following computing equipments and supporting tools

  • Servers : 03
  • PCs : 48
  • Thin clients : 11
  • Printer/Scanner : 05
  • Online UPS : 03
  • LAN Trainer Kit : 01
Embedded Laboratory

There is one hardware-cum-embedded system laboratory which was recently upgraded from grant received from Govt of Assam. Equipments available in this laboratory includes the following:

LPKF PCB prototyping machine : Circuit board plotter for the production of prototype PCB's and small series, working area 229 mm x 305 mm x 38 mm, high speed spindle motor, adjustable 10.000 - 62.000 rpm. Appropriate for the production of RF -and Microwave boards. Incl. Software package consisting of Circuit Cam PCB (conversion/ insulation software) and Board Master (machine control software).

Special specs : automatic tool change with 10 stations acoustic cabinet (machine hood) included head lighting motorized Z-axis drive development.

Using this machine we can design and create sophisticated PCBs which can be embedded into the circuit.
