1. Brief Profile of the Department: The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University is the first post graduate and premier department of library and information science in the entire North-East India established in 1966 as evening programme with the founder Librarian of Gauhati University, Dr. Jogeswar Sarma as Head-in-charge leading to Bachelor of Library Science (B.Lib.Sc.) degree. In the year 1979, one year Master of Library Science (M.Lib.Sc.) programme was introduced. In 1983, both B.Lib.Sc. and M.Lib.Sc. programmes become one year full time day programme, and in the year 1985 as per the UGC guideline, the programme was restructured as Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.) & Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) programme with some changes in the syllabus. Since 1987 the Ph.D. programme is also introduced. From the academic session 2001-02, as per UGC guidelines two years integrated M.L.I.Sc. programme with four semester has been introduced in place of earlier one-year B.L.I.Sc and M.L.I.Sc prgramme. Keeping in mind about the changing trend of the society, the programmes were again revised from the 2007-08 academic session. This time more importance was given to the use of IT in libraries. In the year 2013-14 new revised syllabus with Credit and Grading system was introduced. Again in the year 2016, the department launched M.Phil. programme and in the year 2017 the M.L.I.Sc. and M.Phil. / Ph.D. syllabus was revised.
The endeavour of the department has been always to enrich, strengthen and support the students to give them opportunities and platform to learn and develop a mind of their own. The department is sure that many of our students would become strong tress of tomorrow and oxygenate the society by supporting the teaching and learning of the education system. 2. UGC NET Qualified Students: A large number of students from the department have qualified the UGC NET examination. You can find a selected list in

3. Fellowship Awarded to the Students: A large number of our students have qualified in the University Grants Commission (UGC) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), whereas some others got the fellowship from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). 4. Research Projects

4.1 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 20th February, 1992 was sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC) on “An Annotated Bibliography on the Socio-Cultural and Socio-Economic Conditions of the North-Eastern India” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Alaka Buragohain with a total grant of Rs. 4.95 Lakhs.
4.2 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 1st July, 2005 was sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) on “Rural Libraries in North East India: A Machine Readable Database” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Narendra Lahkar with a total grant of Rs. 3,75,175/-.
4.3 A research project for the period of 31st January, 2011 - 30th January, 2012 (1 Year) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Open Access E-Journal Portal of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University” under the Principal Investigator Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 1,00,000-.
4.4 A research project for the period of 30th March, 2013 - 29th March, 2016 (3 Years) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Applications of Information and Communication Technologies in Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University: A Road Ahead” under the guidance of Dr. Arupjyoti Choudhury, Dr. Ankuran Dutta and Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 12,46,000-.
4.5 A research project for the period of 30th March, 2014 - 29th March, 2015 (1 Year) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Old Examination Question Papers of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University: Making it Accessible to the Learners” under the Principal Investigator Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 1,49,000-.
4.6 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 1st July 2015 was sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC) on “Establishment of Model North East India Library Network (NEILIBNET)” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Narendra Lahkar with a total grant of Rs. 10.20 Lakhs.

7. Events Organized by the Department: The department organized a lot of events for the development of the professionals. A list of such programme is available at
GU DLIS Event Organized. Besides this, the department annually celebrate the Dr. S. R. Ranganathan- the Father of Library Science in India’s birthday as the Librarians’ Day on 12th August, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhkrishnan’s birthday as Teachers’ Day on 5th September, Freshmen Social, Farewell to the outgoing students, Picnic, Library Visit of a Metropolitan City in India (3rd Semester) and Saraswati Puja.
8. Publications of the Department: The department is publishing the Journal of Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University annually. Besides, it also published a few seminar / conference proceedings and souvenirs and a publication on the occasion of silver jubilee. A list of department publication is available at

9. Facilities Available at the Department
9.1 Computer Laboratory: The Department has a computer laboratory with LAN facilities and internet connectivity along with sufficient power-backup, printers and scanner. A total of 18 functional computers are there in the laboratory.
9.2 Seminar Library: The seminar library has a collection of 1085 books, a few journals and conference proceedings.
9.3 Classroom with LCD Projector: A dedicated seminar room is available that is well equipped with LCD projector and sound system.
