The department of Arabic was established in September 1969. With the introduction of Semester courses in the PG level, the department has given much emphasis on the functional Arabic so as to motivate the learners to acquire proficiency and skill for their better placement within the country and abroad.

The main objective of the Department is teaching and learning of both classical and modern Arabic at the Post-Graduate level. . It has a glorious past. Many stalwarts of Assamese literature, language and culture including Banikanta Kakati, Birinchi Kumar Barua, Maheswa rNeog, Satyendra Nath Sarma, Golok Chandra Goswami, Upendra Nath Goswami, Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi and Sailen Bharali worked as faculty members of the Department.
