ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Persian was established in 1977 and stands as the sole department in the entire North East India dedicated to various aspects of the Persian language, literature, culture, history, and studies of West Asia, Central Asia, and Turkey. Beyond offering formal courses, the Department prioritizes fostering relations with the Persian-speaking world, particularly Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Central Asian countries. This is achieved through the organization of international seminars, symposia, and cultural exchange programs.
Significant importance is placed on collaborative research, and the Department facilitated the admission of foreign students, especially from Iran and the Arab world, into Gauhati University. Through the diligent efforts of this department, twelve students from Iran have been admitted to pursue Ph.D. programs in various departments at Gauhati University since 2011.

Developing Language Skills
Students are offered guidance in improving their skills in speaking and writing in Persian & Turkish to enable them to face the demands of competitive jobs. The faculties make efforts to build confidence in the students and develop their inner creativity through an interactive teaching-learning methodology which involves group-work, discussion and movie screening in Persian & Turkish.
1. Five Year Integrated Masters Programme (FYIMP)
Intake Capacity: Major=10, Minor= 10
Eligibility: Passed 10+2 any stream
2. Post Graduate Programme
Intake Capacity: 15
Eligibility: Graduates in any discipline from any recognized University having 40% in Major (honors) and 45% in General Course.

4. P.G. Certificate Course in Persian
Intake Capacity: 10
Eligibility: Graduates in any discipline from any recognized University having 40 % in Major (honors) and 45% in General Course.
5. P.G. Diploma Course in Persian
Intake Capacity: 10
Eligibility: Graduates from any recognized University who have completed a six-months course in Persian
6. 1 Year P.G. Advance Diploma Course in Persian

Vision & Mission
The Persian language, literature, and culture have significantly enriched the language, literature, and culture of the Indian subcontinent. In recognition of this, the Department of Persian at Gauhati University is striving to maintain Persian studies in northeastern India. The department organizes numerous academic programs and envisions advancing Persian studies while exploring the contributions of Persian language, literature, and culture to the region's socio-cultural and literary landscape. Additionally, the department plans to establish a translation forum, involving both students and teachers, to translate celebrated Persian literary works into Assamese and vice versa.
The Department has a well equipped library containing textbooks and reference books. It has also computer facilities with LAN and Wi-Fi connections. The computers are installed with Persian software for language development. The facilities include self-learning and monitored learning modules. The department has also audio-visual system to make well acquaint the students with the modern Persian and Turkish language and culture.
Our students can avail opportunity to travel to Iran and other central Asian countries for cultural exchange programmes.

How to find us
The Department of Persian is located in an Assam-type house that is situated to the south of the Main Arts Building, along its left wing. It can be reached from the northern entrance of the Main Arts Building or alternatively, from the path leading from the eastern end of the building.
