Receiving the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Dr. Dharamvir Datta Memorial Oration Award for research work in Liver Diseases in India for the year 2018 from Honorable Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
I am a member of the faculty (Associate Professor) in the Department of Bioengineering and Technology, Gauhati University since February 2010. Has completed B.Sc- Biotechnology from St. Anthony’s College Shillong (1999) , M.Sc -Biotechnology from Gauhati University (2002) after which has joined ICAR research Complex-NEH region barapani in the division of Animal Health (2002-03) as a Research Fellow and learned some of the basic techniques in Molecular Biology. Then has served as a faculty members in the Department of Biotechnology at Cyber Research Training Institute, Burdwan (University of Burdwan ) from 2003-2005 after qualifying the CSIR UGC NET examination (2004), has joined Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) in an ICMR project as an Senior Research Fellow and has been awarded with ICMR-SRF, Individual fellowship (2009-2010) under the supervision of Dr. Premashis Kar, Director Professor Department of Medicine Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. During the period of research at MAMC has also worked as Clinical research coordinator for well known drugs company like Bristol-Myers Squibb, Novartis and Lambda Therapeutics (2007-2010). Under the joint supervision of Prof. P Kar and Dr. M Deka has been awarded Ph.D. in the Year 2011, on host Genetic Factors TLR3 and MAVS in Hepatitis C Virus Infection from Gauhati University. In recognition of significant contribution for the advancement of Medical Sciences, has been elected as Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciencs (India) in the year 2017.
As group leader in the Laboratory of Molecular virology and Oncology (LMVO) in Department of Bioengineering and Technology, Gauhati University has completed -6 Research Project as PI, (DBT-4; ICMR-1; DHR-1) in which the total grant received = 363.46 Lakhs, At present there is Two (2) ongoing project , (DHR-1, ICMR-1) Total grant sanctioned = 147.94 Lakhs
The project has collaboration with Assam University Diphu campus, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati; Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi; Jamia Millia Islamia,New Delhi; G. B Pant Hospital, New Delhi; Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, which can be envisaged from the publication. As on 20th June 2024 has 115 publications to his credit in both National and International peer reviewed journals and books. Has supervised 13 (Thirteen) Ph.D.s till date in the field of Liver Diseases and GastroIntestinal cancer.
At present a Department of Health Research under Ministry of Health and Family welfare sponsored training programme on Molecular Biology/Molecular diagnostics (2024-2029) is held on regular interval to conducts basic and advance level molecular biology techniques among the students and research scholars of this region.
LMVO also served as Regional Research Centre along with ICMR-RMRC, in an ICMR-task force project for Molecular detection of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B. Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D and Hepatitis E from all the major hospitals of Northeast India.

Travel award by World Congress of Gastroenterology (WCG) in the Basic Scientist category (Awarded to the top100 paper worldwide) to attend the WCOG conference at London from 21st to 25th Nov 2009.
Young Investigator Bursary award by EASL to attend the EASL International Liver congress at Vienna, Austria, from 14th to 18th April 2010.
Recipient of Young Investigator Bursary award by European Association for Study of Liver (EASL) to attend the EASL Monothematic Conference on Alcoholic Liver Disease held at Athens, Greece ,from 10th –12th December 2010.
