Uxa and Jonaki: Unicode compliant Assamese Fonts:
Unicode compliant Assamese Fonts “Uxa” and “Jonaki” have been designed and developed at the Department of Information Technology, Gauhati University. Assamese writing system often faces problems with proper rendering of Conjunct Characters Glyphs. Assamese is a highly agglutinative language, and requires complex clusters to be generated in the writing style. Uxa and Jonaki have been developed in the NLP and Language Technology Lab of the Department under the Principal Investigator Prof. Shikhar Kr Sarma, and Co Principal Investigator Kishore Kashyap. The development has been funded by RUSA, (Rastriya Ucchatar Siksha Abhiyan), Government of Assam.
These two fonts are capable of rendering almost all possible and usable Clusters/Conjunct Characters in Assamese Language.
The fonts are also supplemented with specially designed Assamese Keyboards: “ASScript Keyboard”, and “ASPhonetic Keyboard”.
The problems of shifting to English Keyboard for some symbols, special characters etc., while typing Assamese, have been resolved in both ASScript and ASPhonetic keyboards. All required Key strokes are made available in the single keyboard layout itself.
