About

The Department of Disabilities Studies was established in 2010. Gauhati University is the fourth university in the country to take initiatives for setting up a Department of Disabilities Studies - a new area in the field of Disability Rehabilitation, Special Education, Community Mobilisation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

The main aim of the department is to bridge the gulf between the able and disabled persons, accepting disability as a condition and not as a disease.

Our objective has been to offer post-graduate course in Disabilities Studies. For more information this, please see Courses & Programmes section. We also organise Celebration of International Day for the Disabled. Some of the past events organized by our department are - Interaction with officials of Microsoft, Interaction with Prof. Shiv Jatan Thakur (former member of the Bihar Public Service Commission), Interaction with the Director of Disability Studies, IGNOU, Interaction with the State Consultant, SSA. In the past, we have organised lectures on speech therapy, interaction with visually impaired teachers, holding awareness programmes and street meetings, field study (or case study) in different places of Assam, demonstration on special computer softwares and use of Braille Printer by Karishma Enterprise, Homage Programme for Louis Braille on the occasion of his 203rd birth anniversary, and inauguration of GU-NTPC Foundation ICT Training Center for persons with disabilities.

1. Post Graduate Certificate Course in Disabilities Studies (PGCCDS)

     Intake Capacity: 25

     Duration of the Programme: 6 months

  Admission Process: Minimum Qualification for the enrolment of PGCCDS is Graduation in any stream. The selection will be based on merit. Quota for other univeristy will be as per G.U. norms.

2. Post Graduate Diploma in Disabilities Studies (PGDDS)

     Intake Capacity: 25

     Duration of the Programme: 6 months

     Admission Process: The Post Graduate Diploma in Disabilities Studies is being offered to those students, who have passed the Post Graduate Certificate Course in Disabilities Studies or any equivalent course from any recognised University/ National Institution. The selection will be based on merit. Quota for other university will be   as per G.U. norms.

3. Foundation Course in Science Teaching for Visually Impaired (FCSTVI) - Under GU-NTPC Foundation Project

4. Certificate Course in Computer Literacy for differently able (CCCL)- Under GU-NTPC Foundation Project

 The Department organizes various Field Visits trips to many organizations like:

a. Ashadeep Day Care & Rehabilitation Centre, Guwahati

b. Vocational Rehabilitation Centre For Handicapped, Guwahati

c. Guwahati Eye Institute and Research Centre, Guwahati

d. District Social Welfare Offices of different disticts

e. Guwahati Blind School, Basistha, Guwahati

f. Block level Resource Centres for Children with Special Needs (SSA) etc.

The objectives of particular extensive service and project is to:

1. To extend services in the field of Disability through Case Study and Field Study.

2. To know how to develop a Project and present it on the basis of the Case Study and Field Study.

3. To apply the knowledge of Daily Living Skills (DLS) for Persons with Disabilities.

The students from the Department extends various services in the nearby areas and their own locality by identifying various Persons with Disabilities through Case Studies and Field Studies
